Covid-19: From Lord of the Flies to the Wizard of Oz

Covid took us from Lord of the Flies to the Wizard of Oz.

First we turned on one another in fear of a beast, and the worst of our nature was revealed as we stigmatized and dehumanized those who refused to conform. In the end, we became the beast.

Then the truckers rolled in and delivered much needed courage to all the people who couldn’t find their own over the past two years, especially scientists, doctors, and members of the media who were afraid to speak out against the accepted narrative. It’s a heart warming rendition of the Wizard of Oz, where people begin to realize they always did have a brain, a heart, and courage, and there is nothing they ever needed behind the curtain.

We must remember that mindless conformity can lead to violence, and as William Golding warned, “the shape of a society must depend on the ethical nature of the individual and not on any political system however apparently logical or respectable”.

It won’t be the last pandemic we face and that challenges us to our core. This is why we must learn these lessons today, and begin to heal.
